Trust and Natural Disasters in the U.S.
What are the effects of natural disasters on trust? Every year, the U.S. is hit by natural disasters that take away lives and cause property damages. Recent literature on the impact of natural disasters find mixed results. To answer this question, I observe the effects of contemporary natural disasters on individual’s social capital using the data from the General Social Survey and the Current Population Survey at the state level. I find that individuals experiencing more contemporaneous natural disasters are more likely to trust others and cooperate more with their neighbors.
